Fuel spills at this location have endangered the chief source of freshwater on the island of O’ahu. Early response by the Navy appeared to be aimed at the public-relations aspects rather than substantive ones — to the point that we questioned whether the Navy was adhering to its own Core Values.
Because of the extreme vulnerability of the civilian and military populations on the island, and its often-unique ecology and wildlife, and remembering that past military activity already rendered the smaller, nearby isle of Kaho’olawe virtually uninhabitable, we advise citizen scientists and others to independently monitor and publish the ongoing efforts and after-effects of incidents at Red Hill. —H2O IQ editor
